Synopsis
A modern fairytale about a woman who never asked for much in life, and didn’t even get that.
Akakiy Akakievitchna was deeply devoted to her work. An underpaid, unnoticed administrative assistant in an under-funded, unimportant government department, she came to work each day only to be ridiculed by colleagues and scrape together enough to feed herself and stave off the ferocious St.Petersburg winters.
One day – no one quite remembers when – she set her sights on a higher aspiration than any in her life so far; a new overcoat.
Scandal and Gallows returns to Omnibus Theatre with a delightfully dark and absurdist staging of Nikolai Gogol’s famous short story, a bitingly funny commentary on social disparity that’s still all too relevant today.
